Exhibition
Objective:Â
Encourage students to reflect on their artistic journey, select representative pieces of their work, and curate a personal exhibition that tells a coherent, engaging story of their evolution, themes, or skills.
Instructions:
Theme Selection: Start by determining the theme or narrative for your exhibition. This could be based on your artistic evolution, a particular technique you've mastered, a consistent subject you've explored, or any other central idea you identify in your work.
Artwork Selection: Choose a set number of pieces (e.g., 5-10) that best fit your chosen theme. Consider the flow of the exhibition: which piece will be introduced first? Which will be the climax? How do you want to conclude?
Write Descriptions: For each selected piece, write a brief description or artist statement (around 100-150 words). This should offer insight into the inspiration behind the work, the techniques used, and its relevance to the exhibition's theme.
Design the Space: Plan the layout of your exhibition. Even if it's a virtual space or a presentation, consider:
The sequence in which works are displayed.
Lighting, spacing, and positioning for each piece.
Interactive elements or supplementary materials (like videos, sketches, or mood boards) that can enhance the viewer's experience.
Promotional Material: Create an exhibition poster or digital flyer, including the exhibition's title, date, a brief overview, and images of 1-2 highlighted works.
Opening Night: Organize an 'opening night,' whether in-person, over a video call, or through an online platform. Present your works, discuss your theme, and entertain questions or feedback from peers, instructors, or any invited guests.
Guestbook/Feedback: Provide a means for visitors to leave comments, feedback, or interpretations of your work, either in a physical guestbook or a digital format.
Exhibition (noun)
General Definition: A public display of works of art or items of interest, held in an art gallery or museum or at a trade fair.
Broader Context: An exhibition can also refer to the act of displaying or presenting something, or a demonstration or display of a particular skill or quality.
Synonyms: display, show, presentation, showcase, exposition, fair
An exhibition is often organized with the intention of attracting visitors, sharing knowledge, selling products, or demonstrating expertise. The nature and purpose of an exhibition can vary widely, from art shows that present paintings, sculptures, or other art pieces, to trade fairs where businesses showcase their products to potential buyers.
Assessment Criteria:
Cohesiveness of Theme: How effectively the chosen artworks align with and convey the exhibition's theme.
Quality of Display: Consideration given to the sequence, lighting, spacing, and overall presentation.
Depth of Descriptions: Insightfulness and clarity of the descriptions or artist statements for each piece.
Promotional Material: Creativity and effectiveness of the promotional poster or flyer.
Engagement: Ability to engage, explain, and interact during the 'opening night'.
Note to Students: This assignment isn't just about showcasing your best works, but also about crafting a narrative and presenting your artistic journey. Treat it as a holistic experience, where every element, from the space design to the descriptions, contributes to the story you're telling.
